Whether you use Hotmail all the time, or you simply use it as a backup email account, you should periodically change the password. This serves several purposes, first and foremost helping to keep your information safe and secure from possible hackers. But how to change your Hotmail password? It is actually surprisingly easy to do.

To change your Hotmail password, follow these directions.

  1. Sign in. In order to change your Hotmail password, you need to first access your account. This shouldn’t be all that difficult, but if you do not remember your password don’t worry. There are still some options you can do to recover or reset your password. However, these instructions assume that you are currently able to access the account.
  2. Go to your profile. After signing in to your Hotmail account, you need to then click on your profile. This will allow you to access your profile, and double check to make sure that your contact information is accurate. Take a moment and make any changes that you feel are necessary.
  3. Go to account. In the upper right-hand corner of the webpage, click on your profile image. This will give you the option of accessing your account settings. Click on that button, and you will be taken to the Overview of your Account Summary.
  4. Password and Security Info. On the overview of your Account Summary page, look halfway down, you should notice a heading entitled “Password and Security info.” Underneath this heading you will see a statement that says “It’s a good idea to choose a password that you don’t use elsewhere.” Under that statement you will see a link that says “change password,” which you will click in a moment. Take a moment before you do to look over the security information since this is what ensures that you are able to access your account even if you forget the actual password in the future. When it is how you want it, go ahead and click “Change Password.”
  5. Enter information. You need to enter your current password. Once you have done that, you will then need to enter the new password. This new password needs to be a minimum of 8 characters, and is case sensitive, so be careful as you enter it. You are also given the option to be forced to change your password every 72 days, so if you want to check the box. Click on the “Save” button.

Once you have finished hitting the save button, you are taken back to the Overview of your Account Summary. Again, double check to make sure all your information is correct. You have now finished changing the password of your Hotmail account. All you need to do is make sure that you have your password written down in a safe and secure location so that you don’t forget it.
